Sales Myth: Great Salespeople Can Sell Anything to Anyone
There is an old belief in sales that a truly great salesperson can sell anything to anybody. It makes for good movies and motivational speeches, but it is not how most real B2B buying works. If the prospect has no problem, no urgency, no budget, and no reason to change, even an excellent salesperson is pushing uphill.
Great salespeople absolutely matter. They ask better questions, build trust faster, recognize objections, understand politics, and know when to press and when to listen. But skill improves probability; it does not create a buying window from nothing. In most markets, the majority of companies are stable most of the time, while a much smaller group is actively dealing with change that may create motivation to investigate new options.
This is where AI can make a strong salesperson even better. Instead of handing them a long list and expecting personality and persistence to overcome bad timing, use AI to help identify the companies where something meaningful has changed: expansion, new leadership, new funding, a product launch, a facility move, regulatory pressure, or another event that may create a reason to act.
The best salespeople still need skill, preparation, and work ethic. But the real competitive advantage comes from combining those strengths with better intelligence. Do not ask a great salesperson to sell to everybody. Put them in front of the people who have a reason to listen.
