There was a time when account research took real effort. A salesperson might spend an hour digging through websites, press releases, LinkedIn profiles, and company news just to understand what was happening. Today, AI can compress much of that work into minutes. That changes the standard.
A salesperson should now be able to walk into a call knowing the basics: what the company does, what may have changed, who matters, what business issue might exist, and why the conversation could be timely. AI does not guarantee the answer is right, but it can dramatically reduce the cost of being informed.
That means weak preparation becomes less defensible. “I didn’t have time to research the account” is becoming the sales equivalent of saying, “I didn’t have time to look at the map.” The tools are there. The question is whether the salesperson uses them.
The competitive implication is simple: when preparation gets cheaper, the standard for preparation goes up. The salesperson who still shows up uninformed will increasingly be competing against someone who does not.
